Reflections on our Natural Capital RFP

July 2025

Despite having major industries engaged with natural capital value chains such as agriculture, fisheries and forestry, there are limited impact investment products in Canada that aim to conserve and regenerate nature. To change this situation and preserve Canada’s abundant natural capital, we worked with Nature Investment Hub to solicit proposals for creative product concepts that could use our support. Through that process we granted funding to two organizations (read more).

To support our own learning, as well as wider learning in the market, we prepared a report reflecting on the process.

The reflection distils key takeaways from the process, surfacing innovative ideas, revealing emerging trends and highlighting what is needed to mobilize private capital toward nature-based solutions. It also emphasizes the role of Indigenous leadership, the importance of diverse partnerships, the need for concessionary capital and the opportunity to expand beyond traditional revenue models.

As many of these natural capital initiatives remain in early stages, there is a clear opportunity for investors and capital providers to play a catalytic role in advancing them toward implementation. This report outlines key strategic gaps and actionable opportunities where targeted support can accelerate the development of scalable, natural capital investment strategies over time.
